Wong Wei Kitt

“Hi, I’m Associate Professor Wong Wei Kitt from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. I joined Curtin Malaysia in 2015, so I guess I’m considered a veteran here. I hail from Kuala Lumpur, and the fact that I’ve been here for so long is because I really love living in Miri and working with the wonderful people at Curtin Malaysia.

A common misconception about Borneo is that life here is very relaxed, but I can tell you that as part of a global university, we at Curtin Malaysia work very hard to excel in a competitive regional and global environment. In ancient times, people would use a metal to sharpen another metal. As academics, we constantly sharpen ourselves in the same way, mentality, intellectually, and holistically. This is growth for me even at this stage of my life. As an educator, I’m constantly learning. My students recently taught me Gen-Z lingo like ‘brb’, ‘gtg’ and ‘gigi’, which I found quite fascinating.

What do I find memorable about Curtin Malaysia? This campus has a big signboard with the university motto, Make Tomorrow Better, which I find very inspiring. The motto reminds us to make tomorrow a better place. Tomorrow must be better than today because we have the ability to improve it. I believe students must be inspired to make tomorrow better every day. Find a cure for cancer, solve global warming, reduce plastic waste, increase social equality, be kind to animals, etcetera. Every time I pass by that sign, I’m reminded of the reason of I’m here – to make tomorrow better.Wong Wei Kitt, Electrical and Computer Engineering lecturer
