“I returned to Miri after graduating from my diploma program in Kuala Lumpur, and initially wanted to study my degree at Curtin Perth as it offered the double degree I was interested in. However, that was at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Miri was still a red zone and everyone was at home under lockdown.
“Eventually, I settled for Curtin Malaysia as it was right here in Miri and studies were fully online for the first year. Though everything was conducted online at the time, I kept up with as many student activities as I could, participating in club activities as a committee member, entering competitions and joining webinars that open to students.
“Even now that the campus has re-opened, I still mostly study online since there are no HSE lecturers here and my core units are being done with Curtin Perth lecturers. It can be quite daunting studying online alone and you have to maintain a rigid schedule and practise good time management to meet all the due dates and complete assessments. I don’t recommend studying online unless you are very disciplined when it comes to time management.
“I hope for the rest of my studies to be smooth sailing, and that the learning experience for the next batch of HSE students will be a lot more conducive. Nevertheless, it has been a great experience and I’m happy to be a part of Curtin Malaysia.” –Vinny Chin, BSc Health, Safety & Environment student
