“Every beginning is challenging, and it is not always the actual new activity or situation that is difficult but adapting can be. I arrived in Miri for the first time in July 2018 to study at Curtin Malaysia, and as an international student transitioning from high school to university life and moreover in a strange country, the first month was quite challenging, both academically and socially. However, Curtin Malaysia gave me lots of opportunities to get well acquainted with university life and the Malaysian culture and I soon settled in quite well.
“Apart from academic life, singing has always been one of my greatest passions, and in 2019, I was privileged to perform at Curtin Malaysia’s 20th Anniversary Alumni Homecoming. I also gained leadership skills by being in the Curtin Malaysia Student Council in 2020. In my role in the International Sub-council, I worked with Office of Student Affairs to provide a variety of services catering to our international students.
“In addition to that, I was an IEEE Curtin Malaysia Student Branch student volunteer for the STEM Virtual Playground in 2020. In 2021, I became a committee member of the student branch, taking on the role of Head of Membership. I also joined AIESEC in Curtin University, helping it develop more leadership potential amongst its members and, as an aspiring engineer myself, attain the Sustainable Development Goals.
“Being part of the Curtin family is a great honour for me, and I advise all new students to join clubs and societies on campus, make lots of friends and acquire all the knowledge and skills you can. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so don’t waste it.” –Vincent Tasara Rwatirera, Electrical and Electronic Engineering student
