Valerie Velina Anaelechi

“Hi, I’m Valerie Velina Anaelechi, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of General Studies at Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences. I also proudly serve as the Faculty’s Chair for External Engagement.

My journey at Curtin Malaysia has been nothing short of enriching, filled with both personal growth and a deep connection to the community. Over the past 17 years, I’ve had the privilege of shaping young minds in the Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences. What drives me is not just teaching theory, but creating learning experiences that inspire my students to engage with real-world issues. My teaching philosophy? It’s all about blending the classroom with hands-on, project-based learning that leaves students empowered to make a meaningful impact on society.

Beyond my work in the classroom, I am passionate about preserving indigenous knowledge – a cause very close to my heart. My PhD research delves into cultural studies, focusing on safeguarding the rich indigenous knowledge of Malaysia’s Bidayuh community. This isn’t just an academic pursuit for me – it’s a mission to honour and amplify the voices of Malaysia’s indigenous peoples. Through collaboration with these communities, I strive to ensure their heritage is not only preserved but celebrated, passing on their wisdom to future generations.”-Valerie Velina Anaelechi, Head of the Department of General Studies
