“Many students think that making it to university is everything because you are considered an adult and can decide your own future and wellbeing. You’re not wrong to think that, but you need to make responsible decisions and make sure you stay on track towards achieving your goal of graduating from university.

“So it’s very important to take advantage of all the opportunities you get as a student. I am fortunate to be in a university that gives students lots of opportunities to develop themselves and excel.

“For example, I have attended many of the webinars conducted by the university to gain extra knowledge. Before joining Curtin Malaysia, I knew little about mental health, but by joining the suicide prevention webinars organised by the Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences and Curtin Counselling, Health and Disability Services, I got a better understanding of what it means to have a mental health disorder and how I could help those suffering from the condition.

“I also took part in the Techstars Startup Weekend organised by the TEGAS Digital Innovation Hub in Miri in collaboration with Curtin Malaysia. I enjoyed it tremendously and won in my category together with the people I teamed up with. Furthermore, I gained entrepreneurship skills other people pay huge sums of money to acquire for absolutely free. I also met amazing people who have become friends and can be potential business partners in the future.

“So, while you’re free to make the most of your university experience, keep a lookout for all kinds of opportunities presented to you, whether big or small. There’s always that opportunity to gain a little extra and impact your future.” -Theodora Abena Yeboah, Journalism and Public Relations student
