Siah Thong
“Hi, I’m final-year chemical engineering student Siah Thong. How did I end up studying chemical engineering at Curtin Malaysia?
“Like most kids, I studied just for the sake of studying in secondary school, not giving much thought to what I would do after that. What I knew was I scored better in the science subjects than arts, so I decided to follow in my older sister’s footsteps and enrolled in the Foundation in Engineering program.
“My experience in the foundation year was beyond expectations. I was so glad to be part of the diverse campus community; my lecturers and newfound friends were so open and approachable. It was such a great learning environment, so different from what I was accustomed to. As soon as I finished the foundation program, I enrolled in the BEng in Chemical Engineering.
“Although almost half of my degree was spent studying from home due to COVID-19, I stayed connected to the campus community through various club activities, albeit entirely online. Nevertheless, I gained valuable soft and interpersonal skills, which indirectly helped me in my studies as I practised more self-discipline and time management.
“My final year brings both excitement and worries about what will come. I’m sure it won’t be easy getting through the final year, but we have very committed lecturers ready to help students, and I have peers whom I can reach out to whenever I’m stuck.” – Siah Thong, Chemical Engineering student
