“It was a very good experience doing an internship with Curtin Malaysia’s Marketing & Communications Department. Before I joined Curtin Malaysia, I worked briefly with a public relations agency where I had to learn a lot of things all at once, like handling multiple clients and tasks. But interning with Curtin Malaysia was a whole new experience because I was not only involved in public relations, but also various aspects of marketing.
“The MarCom team has to churn out new ideas to continually improve its marketing and branding. We had to always keep our target audiences in mind and find ways to attract prospective students, both domestic and international. I found it very challenging, but at the same time, I gained new skills and knowledge.
“At Curtin Malaysia, I have not only gained in terms of an education, but also life skills like dealing with people and friends, and with my feelings and emotions. The campus community may be small, with just over 4000 students, but I never thought I’d learn so much from on a daily basis. It has been quite a journey for me at Curtin Malaysia, with bittersweet memories, but it has been largely a journey of self-discovery and one I’ll cherish always.
“My message as a graduating student to those who are still in the midst of their student journeys is don’t set your expectations too high, take things in stride, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Always reflect on what you do, know what is best for you, and stay true to your values. As for your studies, just stay focused and always remember what you came here for – to earn a degree. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, whether it 3, 4 or 5 years, just focus on getting that degree!” –Shima Parawathy (Indonesia), Mass Communications and Public Relations student
