Shaikh Tahmid Hassin

Shaikh and his wife revisiting the Curtin Malaysia campus

After graduating from Curtin Malaysia with a Mass Communications degree, Shaikh Tahmid Hassin travelled to the US to chase his dream of working for a big PR firm in the heart of New York City.

Landing a job in one of the world’s biggest cities, Shaikh came across a customer service position with Air France and has since worked for various airlines and various airlines and airports, including JFK, La Guardia, and Newark Airport.

With six years of experience in operations and team leadership, Shaikh is now managing a shipping port for one of the world’s busiest cities.

“Managing a shipping port is pretty much organised chaos. My role involves communication between the transport authority and all the stakeholders operating within the port. I’ve been here for three months and it’s great,” he said.

For Shaikh, his time at Curtin is something he has cherished greatly.

“My time at Curtin is something I cherished a lot; I made friends from all over the world.

“The business electives I did laid the groundwork for where I am right now, and I’ve found over the years that having a degree is what gets you through the door,” he said.

To this day, Shaikh still loves going back to visit his old stomping grounds.

“I still love going back to Curtin Malaysia, recently I returned with my wife.

Over the years, I’ve returned around three times, the campus has grown so much since graduating,” he said.

Shaikh’s biggest advice for those uncertain about their future is to make mistakes.

“It’s better to make mistakes when you’re young, and if you make one, it’s not the end of the world.

“I’ve applied for thousands of jobs in the last seven years and done more than 60 interviews – I’ve often found some of the best opportunities have come when I have least expected,” Shaikh said.
