“Coming from a rather conservative community back in Zimbabwe, studying at Curtin Malaysia has given me a different perspective on life. It has got me thinking more about female empowerment, educating African society and how cultural norms can be changed in tune with modern times.
“Coming to university here has helped me grow as a person. As a university student, I may have more freedom to manage my own affairs, but I have to be responsible at the same time, like making sure I save enough money and pay my monthly rent on time.
“The most significant experience I’ve had as a student was when I became an orientation leader. I’m generally soft-spoken, so it was quite a challenge when I was asked to emcee an event. I was pushed out of my comfort zone and was quite surprised I could do it and keep people entertained.
“It was also nice working with an energetic and diverse team of local and international students, working to make sure new students felt welcome and that their needs were met. The skills, friendships and memories I got from the experience will stay with me forever.” –Rumbi Mawayo, Tourism & Hospitality and Marketing student
