“I remember when I first started working at Curtin Malaysia and I was sitting at the receptionist desk in the old gym which was only the size of about two bathrooms. As a fitness instructor, consultant and officer, I longed to see the gym expanded into a larger, modern and fully-equipped one where staff and students would feel excited to work out at.
“I was soon appointed to head the Sports and Recreational Services section, and worked alongside the management, staff and students to make it a reality. It was not easy due to limited resources, but we managed to make it happen. The larger, renovated gym is housed in the Recreation & Event Centre, which also has three indoor badminton courts and basketball court. All these sporting facilities are under my supervision, and countless events are also held there.
“It can get quite hectic balancing the demands of the various sports clubs, the Student Council and different areas of the university with their activities and events. We have over 50 clubs, three faculties and numerous operational areas on campus and accommodating all their requests is not easy. But I try to be fair and keep everyone’s best interests at heart. It’s all about providing the best sports and recreational services to the campus community.” –Mohd. Shahrizan bin Zaini, Sports & Recreation Officer
