Lim Chye Ing

“Hi, I’m Lim Chye Ing, an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering department at Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science.

I joined Curtin Malaysia in December 2009 after working for eight years in the power generation industry as a mechanical maintenance engineer. Switching career from industry to academia in my early 30s wasn’t an easy decision. I was suddenly faced with a new work environment with different expectations, even though I found these uncertainties quite challenging and exciting.

Fortunately, the University had a good support system for new academics, which made the career transition and development easier. I later completed my PhD under a Curtin Offshore Partner;s Research Scholarship on a part-time basis at the Curtin Perth campus. Futhermore, through the years, there has been many great mentors among my colleagues who have offered guidance and helped me get on track quickly, which I really appreciate.

Currently, I am holding the position of Associate Dean of External Engagement in the Faculty, leading the faculty in building strategic partnerships with external stakeholders through various forms of collaboration to achieve mutual objectives.

The journey to becoming an academic has been fulfilling and enriching and I continue to learn new things every day. I find my job rewarding, especially when our industry partners praise our Curtin graduates as being highly knowledgeable, skilled and employable, and when our graduates shine in their careers.” – Lim Chye Ing, Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering
