Lee Tone

“Hi, I’m Lee Tone, currently in Semester 2 of the Foundation in Engineering and Science programme at Curtin Malaysia, and I plan to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering following my foundation year.

The adage ‘hard work pays off’ holds true to my education journey. Throughout secondary school, I was really focused on my studies. I also participated in innovation competitions such as Shell’s #MyGeekMovement STEM programme and the Young Innovators Challenge where I received excellence awards for my Arduino project. Although it was challenging, I’m glad I invested all that time and effort in my studies.

Last August, I was awarded a scholarship under the PETRONAS Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP). I am deeply grateful for this invaluable opportunity to further my education at Curtin Malaysia. Coincidentally, I was also given the opportunity to pursue further studies at another institution in Johore, but the PESP scholarship was particularly meaningful as it allows me to study in Miri, my hometown, and be with my loved ones.

Besides, Curtin was always my first choice for tertiary education, given its reputation as a top-ranked global university. The learning environment at Curtin Malaysia is conducive, and there are numerous student clubs engaged in diverse activities to join. It has been a very enriching experience for me so far.

For leisure, I participate in squash training and matches. Since 2018, I have taken part in numerous squash competitions, including the Miri Closed 2018 Squash Tournament and CMS S1 Miri Leg 2018. I find squash to be very dynamic sport and very effective in alleviating stress.

Being a K-pop fan, I possess skills in video editing, audio splicing, and producing fan-made merchandise. Amidst the challenges of academia, I also find solace in watching videos featuring my favourite K-pop group, Astro.

I firmly believe that ‘all the cool stuff happens when you do things that are not the automatic next step’. Embracing challenges, stepping out of one’s comfort zone, and daring to attempt the seemingly impossible are crucial for personal and professional growth. As I continue my academic journey at Curtin Malaysia, I will continue to realise my dreams for the future.” – Lee Tone, Foundation in Engineering and Science student
