“Nine years ago, I moved from Singapore to Miri with my husband when he got a job in the oil and gas industry here. I was delighted to be able to land a job as a lecturer at Curtin Malaysia and carry on my teaching career here.

“I am a recipient of the 2014 Curtin Award for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching under the Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning category, but I can’t say I have a special talent for teaching. I’m just passionate about discovering and trying different innovative teaching methods to help my students learn and understand better.

“To many people, physics is a difficult subject but I love to think up simple ways to explain things to my students. It brings me great joy and satisfaction to see their faces light up whenever they finally grasp a concept.

“Being in Borneo, nature is right at my doorstep. I’ve trekked mountains and caves, scuba-dived among beautiful corals and marine life, and strolled along the pristine beaches here. The peace and tranquility of this place is very alluring. I have absolutely no regrets coming here.” –Lai Zhenyue, Lecturer in Physics and Mathematics
