“When my parents told me that I would be moving to Miri when I was 18, I was pretty taken aback and wasn’t sure what I was in for. Although the plan was to study engineering, I decided to enroll in applied geology instead a month before the commencement of classes, which surprised everyone, including myself. Did I regret it? Not at all. Was it scary making such a move? A little bit. But really, you can do anything if you put your mind to it, and now I’m on my way to becoming a geologist.

“Curtin has provided me lots of opportunities to develop myself through participation in clubs, events and activities for students. I joined the Curtin Geology Club and took the opportunity to be on the committee of the Curtin Malaysia IEEE Student Branch and The Founders Club. At first, I didn’t know what I could contribute to these clubs as their activities were quite unrelated to what I was studying, but I went ahead and ended up amazing myself and having lots of fun at it.

“What’s fun about being an applied geology student is the geology field trips we go on. It’s fascinating studying the Earth. Learning the theories in class and then seeing and touching the actual objects in the field is a fantastic – even mind-boggling – experience.

“I’m coming to the end of my course and I can say I’m pretty happy with all the learning, memories, and friends I have made throughout my time here at Curtin Malaysia. I’ve also enjoyed living in the city of Miri. I’m eternally grateful to everyone I’ve met here who have been real friends and helped me grow.” –Khairina Binti Mohammad Khatib, Applied Geology student
