Kenneth Lim Zheng Yuan

“Hi, I’m third-year mechanical engineering student Kenneth Lim Zheng Yuan.

I joined Curtin Malaysia as a Foundation in Engineering and Science student in 2020, which meant I started my university journey online as the COVID-19 pandemic had just started. Fortunately, I was able to study my undergraduate degree in face-to-face mode and am now in my third year of the Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering.

I have really cherished my time in Curtin Malaysia, thanks to the support of the great lecturers and my friends. The university has also provided me with lots of opportunities to enhance my soft skills through participation in club activities.

I joined the Young Innovator Challenge as an IEEE tech mentor in 2021 while we were still in lockdown, and when we returned to campus, I became an IEEE Curtin Malaysia Student Branch committee member responsible for community outreach. All of us involved in community outreach were not used to organising physical events at first after two years of online activities, but we soon got the hang of it and started to acquire new leadership, communication, engagement, and management skills.

Besides the IEEE, I joined several other clubs and events in various capacities, such as committee member of the Curtin Social Ambassadors, game master for The Great Escape Camp, and head of community outreach for the Rotaract Club. I am now President of the IMechE Curtin Malaysia Student Chapter, and though it can be difficult managing a club, it is still an excellent experience and an opportunity to acquire soft skills that will be helpful in my future career.

Lastly, I am a proud recipient of a Sarawak Energy Berhad scholarship, which I received in 2021. If I had not joined Curtin Malaysia, I would not have gotten the scholarship, so thanks to both Curtin Malaysia and Sarawak Energy!”- Kenneth Lim Zheng Yuan, Mechanical Engineering student
