Joyce Tiong Ka Kiong

“Hi, I’m third-year civil and construction engineering student Joyce Tiong Ka Kiong.

Time flies, as in 2019 I was marking the beginning of my Foundation of Engineering and Science studies at Curtin Malaysia, and here I am now, in my final year of the Bachelor of Engineering in Civil and Construction Engineering.

I chose to study at Curtin Malaysia for my undergraduate education because it was the most conveniently-located international university for me. I am glad I had great housemates during my first year of university who were so helpful. They helped me navigate the many challenges we faced as we learned the ropes of university life, moreover in a new and strange environment.

Aside from that, I was fortunate enough to be able to join the Curtin Cup and Curtin Badminton Club while in my foundation year before the COVID-19 pandemic forced me to complete the first and second years of my degree online.

“Being a woman, what attracted you to study civil and construction engineering and want to become a site engineer?” This is a question I am frequently asked, especially during my internship. Well, a civil engineer gets to be involved in a wide range of different projects. Therefore, my response is always that working on-site is much more interesting than sitting behind a desk. This ensures that my career will be enjoyable and challenging in the future.” – Joyce Tiong Ka Kiong, Civil and Construction Engineering student
