“Hi, I’m Jason Yee Zhi Cheng, a final-year Chemical Engineering student at Curtin Malaysia.

Back in 2022, when face-to-face classes resumed after the pandemic, I felt completely out of place. It was my first time on campus, and I didn’t know anyone. The new environment and unfamiliar faces made everything feel awkward. To break out of this, I decided to get involved in group work and joined student clubs like the American Chemical Society and the Rotaract Club, where I became a committee member. That was the turning point for me – I not only made lifelong friends through these social activities but also grew more confident and outgoing.

I chose Curtin for my tertiary education because of its reputation as a top-ranked global university and its renowned Chemical Engineering programme. The coursework is definitely challenging, but the lecturers are always available for after-class consultations. Even though I’m not a top student, they are patient and supportive in answering my questions. I’m truly grateful for the quality of education and guidance I’ve received here.

Looking back, the experience and memories I’ve gained have been incredible, and I’ll cherish them forever. I believe that things get better when you step out of your comfort zone and take that first step forward. My advice to new students is simple: never skip class, actively participate in group work, and embrace challenges. Every step forward counts!” – Jason Yee Zhi Cheng, Chemical Engineering student
