“Teaching, to me, has never been just about the classroom. It is about the ripple effect – how supporting one person at the right moment can inspire them to support many others.
That belief inspired me to found SuCCESS (Support and Mentorship by Curtin University through Community Engagement with Secondary Schools), bringing together a community of mentors rather than simply providing top-down support.
Today, more than 40 mentors, many of them Petronas scholars from Curtin’s foundation and degree programmes, volunteer their time to help hundreds of Miri students prepare for SPM Mathematics. The most rewarding part is seeing a university student discover the joy of giving back, while a school student realises that mathematics is not as frightening as they once thought. SuCCESS has since expanded to Sibu through a collaboration with UTS, and I hope its impact continues to grow.
That same belief in early intervention led me to help develop the EASI Framework (Early Academic Support and Intervention), enabling students who need help in mathematics to be identified and supported when it matters most. Along the way, I have been fortunate to receive recognition including Fellow status with Advance HE (FHEA), the Curtin Malaysia Learning and Teaching Excellence Award, the Curtin Malaysia Student Learning Award and multiple Student Choice Awards.
But I measure success differently: by the student who finally understands a concept they once feared, the mentor who discovers a passion for giving back, and the community that grows stronger because we chose to show up for one another.” – Jameson Malang, Senior Teaching Fellow, School of Pre-U & Continuing Education
