“As someone from Kuala Lumpur, Curtin Malaysia and Miri have always been close to my heart. When I was a student here more than a decade ago, I never imagined I’d one day return – not as a student, but as a staff member. Many of my lifelong connections and cherished memories were built here, making Curtin an integral part of who I am.

When I rejoined Curtin Malaysia three years ago, I wasn’t sure what to expect, especially with how much communication and media had evolved. Teaching has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Initially, I worried that the generation gap might be a barrier, but instead, it became a bridge. I’ve discovered how each generation learns differently, and how we can learn so much from one another.

Listening to my students’ stories constantly reminds me why communication matters. It’s about voice, identity, connection, and passion.

My hope is that my students leave my classes not only with knowledge, but also with a deeper awareness of the world, and the courage to share their own stories as part of a thriving Curtin community.”Fong Hanley, Associate Teaching Fellow, School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE)
