Farahezza Hairon Nizar

“Salam and hello! I’m Farahezza Hairon Nizar, lecturer in the General Studies Department, Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences, at Curtin Malaysia.

Many have asked us ‘What is General Studies?’. In an education landscape that emphasises technical skills, we totally understand where such questions are coming from. There are many answers to this, but key is Malaysia’s National Education Philosophy, where human development is a key focus.

Thus, our department’s remit is to align with the NEP and ensure that our graduates don’t just excel in their careers but also embody the qualities that make us successful human beings, such as being moral, compassionate, knowledgeable and thoughtful of the world around us. We believe that true success isn’t just about what we know – it’s about who we are.

Some might scoff at the idea of spending time on subjects that aren’t directly related to their career paths. But here’s the thing: I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of a well-rounded education. As I watch my students progress through their years at Curtin Malaysia, I see them grow in ways I never thought possible. While they excel in their chosen fields, they also develop essential leadership and soft skills that set them apart from the crowd.

And employers are taking notice. They recognise the value of this holistic approach to education. At Curtin Malaysia, we are producing graduates, who stand out not only for their technical expertise but also for their adaptability, empathy, and strong moral compass – all qualities that are essential for success in today’s fast-paced world.” – Farahezza Hairon Nizar, General Studies lecturer
