“It’s been a year since I graduated from Curtin Malaysia with a Commerce degree in Accounting & Finance. I have since begun a job handling the accounts at Seratim, a company with a variety of interests, from timber to restaurants and manpower supply. Working in a corporate environment has taught me much, including the importance of discipline, empathy and emotional maturity.

“My passion is in writing and I write for ORKED MAG, an online indie art magazine that encourages freedom of expression among its contributors, feature writers and artists from around Sabah. It has been both liberating and emotionally fulfilling.

“I developed an interest in writing again in my fourth year at Curtin Malaysia, and when I say ‘again’, I mean I had actually long buried the notion of being a writer when I entered university. There is a certain practicality and pragmatism to accounting that appealed to me and the idea of writing for a living very quickly faded as I delved into my studies. But student life at Curtin Malaysia is very dynamic and there’s always something new to discover and experience, and I eventually found myself regaining a fervor for writing, inspired by my experiences as a student there.

“I guess what I’m trying to say is, Curtin Malaysia didn’t just give me an education; it gave me an experience full of excitement and colour, and the promise of an even brighter future.” Emily Mary Chin, Accounting & Finance alumnus
