“I’m a proud recipient of Curtin University’s Excellence in Teaching and Innovation Award, Teacher of the Year Award, and Curtin Malaysia’s Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award. I also received Curtin University’s Best Lecturer – Students Choice Award in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016.

“When it comes to teaching, I do it from my heart and always prioritise students’ learning and critical thinking. I respect my students as unique individuals and embark on measures to put them in charge of their learning. I always make sure to ask the students to be humane and sympathetic, and to be responsible for others just as their parents are responsible for them.

“Every semester, I start my lectures by introducing the concept of relating opportunity cost to life where students calculate both the explicit and implicit cost of their studies. When they realise that their parents could have bought a BMW if they were selfish, students begin to appreciate the opportunity they have to further their studies, and to be sincere to their parents and society.

“Although the standard consultation time is six hours, I always make it possible for students to meet me at any time during office hours. As a result, I’m able to create a conducive learning environment and meet their developmental, emotional and academic needs.” –Dr. Abey P Philip, senior lecturer in economics
