“I’m originally from Lapok, Sarawak. My husband died of a stroke in 1996. My eldest son was only 13 and my second was 11. Life was very tough after my husband passed away. I used to cry each day thinking about him, but I told myself I must get over the misery and work hard to support my children.

“I started farming and earned enough to put my two sons through school. In 2002, we moved to Miri and I did a lot of odd jobs to get by. I worked as a cleaner at an insurance agency in the city before joining Curtin Malaysia. I’m very proud that my hard work all these years have paid off. I’ve managed to buy a house in Senadin and my youngest son graduated from UiTM Kuching. Both my sons are married now and coincidentally, both are managers at oil palm plantations near Miri.” –Chelenga anak RemangCleaner, Campus Services Department
