“Due to COVID-19, much of the world was under lockdown, including Malaysia, and university students were not able to return to campus. As a new foundation student, I was really looking forward to being on campus, experiencing university life, meeting new people, socialising with friends, participating in fun activities, studying in the lecture halls, and even conducting experiments in the labs.

“My Curtin journey started in 2021 as a student in Foundation in Engineering and Science. I enrolled in the July intake and was hyped up for my first day of online university life. I was looking forward to making new friends, getting to know my lecturers, and learning new things. Ever since I first ventured onto the Curtin Malaysia campus in 2015, I had always wanted to study and experience university life here.

“But studying online was challenging due to the distractions around us. Sometimes, I would find myself distracted doing other things rather than paying attention to my online lecture. It wasn’t until the second half of the semester that I found the motivation to stay focused during online classes. I reminded myself that every week is a new week, and after a week of stressful deadlines and classes, I would look forward to the next week. Even when the workload got heavy and I had no clue what I was doing, I found myself making consultation appointments with my lecturers.

“Now I’m looking forward to my bachelor’s degree. My university journey has only just begun and there’s still a long road ahead of me. I’m eager to move forward, take on new challenges, broaden my horizons, and pursue new opportunities.” –Ashley Anak Dominic, Foundation in Engineering and Science student
