“Coming to university has been the biggest turning point in my life.

I’m from the small town of Niah, and choosing Curtin Malaysia felt like the right decision. My brother studied here before me, and his positive experience inspired me to follow in his footsteps. I was also drawn to Curtin’s double major programme, which gives me more opportunities for the future.

When I started university, I promised myself I would step outside my comfort zone. I was shy, introverted, and afraid of speaking up, especially in English. But I knew growth would only come if I challenged myself.

One of the biggest changes began with volleyball. I never considered myself a sporty person, but I decided to give it a try. What started as a challenge became a passion. Through competitions and teamwork, I learned resilience, trust, and the joy of working towards a common goal.

In 2025, I became an Orientation Leader, something I never imagined I could do. The experience helped me become more confident, communicate better, and support new students who were feeling exactly as I once did. My English is still improving, but I’m no longer afraid to speak up, and that is one of my proudest achievements.

“To future students: don’t let fear stop you. Try something new, embrace every opportunity, and believe in your ability to grow. Sometimes, one step outside your comfort zone can change your life.”- Amanda Kho Yen Jia, Management & Marketing student
